Cavaceppi studium
Antisthenes
End of 18th century
Plaster

This head is unquestionably a copy of the herm of the Cynic Antisthenes (fifth–fourth c. BC) and was the work of the Cavaceppi workshop.
The frowning face, covered with a beard, moustache and hair in thick locks, is taken from the iconography typical of the individual.
The original statue, made by Phyromachos in the late second century BC, had curlier hair, and a more bitter and elderly expression on the face. In the Torlonia copy, the thin face, shorter beard and more tousled curls give Antistene a younger appearance.
