Mario Mafai, Piazza del Popolo, 1947, olio su tela, collezione privata

1 November 2008 - 15 February 2009
The Roman School: Artists in Rome between the two World Wars
Casino dei Principi
Type: Contemporary Art

he exhibition, conceived and promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sets out to inform about and foster a greater appreciation for one of the most fascinating chapters in Italy's artistic history, during which Rome was buzzing and international cultural exchanges were plentiful.

Some 50 works are being exhibited, including some by Scipione, Renato Guttuso, Carlo Socrate, Afro Basaledella, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Francesco Trombadori, Mario Mafai, Cipriano Efisio Oppo, Antonietta Raphaël, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Pericle Fazzini, Antonio Donghi, Fausto Pirandello and Corrado Cagli. For the most part, these have been loaned by those who have inherited them, the artist's own archives and from cultural institutions in Rome and elsewhere in Lazio.

The exhibition has been divided into 3 sections: the artist and his studies that narrates the creative process of the artist through self and other portraits, small practice pieces and still life; the city in one's soul, in which the different artists favourite vistas of the city depict their very individual perspectives of Rome and finally, the body, either in its physical state or as a metaphoric exploration, a particularly widespread notion in Catholic Rome.
